Cheryl Maier 15MR 17FM

Assistant Professor | Emory University School of Medicine | Atlanta, GA

Cheryl Maier is an assistant professor in Emory’s Department of Pathology and medical director for the Specialized Coagulation Laboratory. After graduating from the University of Georgia with degrees in microbiology and Classics, she joined the medical scientist training program at Yale to obtain dual MD and PhD degrees. She returned to Georgia for a pathology residency and a transfusion medicine fellowship at Emory as part of the research-track training program, for which she now serves as co-director. Maier joined Emory’s faculty in January 2020, securing extramural funding from the National Institutes of Health as the recipient of a career development award. With the start of the COVID pandemic, she quickly became part of Emory’s multidisciplinary COVID anticoagulation team and led a randomized controlled trial on the role of therapeutic plasma exchange in COVID-19. She continues to investigate COVID pathology and new treatment modalities that may translate into interventions for acutely ill patients.
