Michelle Ye Hee Lee is The Washington Post's Tokyo/Seoul bureau chief, covering Japan, North Korea, and South Korea. Prior to moving to Tokyo in the summer of 2021, Leer was a reporter on The Post’s national politics desk covering money in politics and voting access. She joined The Post in 2014 as a reporter on The Fact Checker, rating politicians’ statements on a Pinocchio scale. Previously, she was a government accountability reporter at The Arizona Republic in Phoenix, Arizona. In her free time, Lee volunteers with the Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) as the organization’s president. AAJA is a nonprofit of more than 2,000 journalists across the United States and Asia, dedicated to media diversity and fair and accurate news coverage of underrepresented communities, especially Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. Lee was born in Seoul, raised on Guam, and is a naturalized U.S. citizen. She majored in international studies and English.
