Born in Puerto Rico, Eddie Lopez-Lugo 08Ox 10C earned dual degrees in economics and political science at Emory. Among his most meaningful experiences were his time at Oxford College and a study abroad program in Paris focused on political science. Courses in constitutional law at Emory inspired him to pursue a career in law. After completing law school in Puerto Rico, he returned to metro Atlanta, where he began practicing immigration law and, in 2018, founded his own firm.
Lopez-Lugo’s most significant professional achievement was serving as the only appointed counsel in Georgia for detained immigrants with mental health conditions facing deportation. Over the past eight years, his advocacy has led to appointments in similar cases across several states. Although the work is demanding, Lopez-Lugo finds it deeply rewarding to uphold the due process rights of some of the most vulnerable people: those who are both detained and living with mental illness.
