Meet Ja’Ann M. Major, a dedicated attorney in The Bahamas specializing in real estate transactions, including foreign direct investment, acquisitions, and financing for private clients and large commercial developments. As a Partner at Higgs & Johnson, a Tier 1 corporate and commercial law firm with a 75-year legacy, Major serves as deputy chair of the firm’s real estate and development and maritime and aviation practice groups. 

Major holds a dual honors bachelor of arts degree in Law (LL.B.) with business administration from Keele University. She was admitted to the Bar of England and Wales and the Bar of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas in 2008, and in 2009, she earned her master of laws (LL.M.) degree from Emory. Recognized by The Legal 500 Caribbean (2023-2024) as a recommended attorney in real estate, Major also serves on the board of the Bahamas Maritime Authority and the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation.

Beyond her legal practice she serves in the Senate of the Bahamas and on the Boards of the Bahamas Maritime Authority and the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce & Employers Confederation reflecting her commitment to national development and public service.

Major enjoys traveling and experiencing new places, fine dining, baking, singing, binge-watching a good series on Netflix, exploring her creativity through event planning or decorating, and spending time with her family and loved ones. Major finds fulfillment in helping clients acquire their first homes and working on large commercial developments that create jobs for Bahamians. She believes that life is a journey and every step shapes who we are, so it’s important to embrace the process and enjoy the moments.

She says that Emory taught her how to adapt when taken out of her comfort zone and that the school’s reputation has been a point of pride throughout her career. She calls the connections she made here invaluable.
